The area
Canggu is where most people first imagine living in Bali: cafes, surf, gyms, coworking and a constantly refreshing international crowd. It's also the most congested and fastest-changing part of the island.
Housing
Enormous supply and equally enormous price range. Newer complexes are well specified but small; land and quiet are expensive.
Schools and families
A handful of good international and alternative schools nearby, though the commute can be slow in the wet season.
Eating and drinking
Probably the densest concentration of good cafes and restaurants in Southeast Asia.
Beaches and nature
Black-sand surf beaches — excellent for surfing, less suited to small children.
Sport and wellness
Surfing, CrossFit, padel, boxing, yoga, running — the best fitness infrastructure in Bali.
Healthcare
Good clinics; serious care means driving to Denpasar or Sanur.
Getting around
Scooter is essentially mandatory. Cars struggle at peak hour.
Community
Young, international, entrepreneurial and transient.
Commuting
45–90 minutes to the airport depending on traffic.
Ideal for
- Remote workers
- Surfers
- Couples and singles
- People who want a scene
Less ideal for
- Anyone allergic to traffic
- Households needing school runs at peak hour
- People wanting quiet
Common questions
- Is Canggu good for families?
- It can be, but most families settle slightly outside the core — Pererenan, Umalas or Seseh — to escape the traffic while keeping the lifestyle.
